FUGRO-BKS Wins A5 WTC Project

Fugro-BKS Limited, a leading supplier of geographic information products and services, has recently been awarded what will be the largest road-related laser mapping project in Ireland. The Roads Service scheme to upgrade the A5 Western Transport Corridor (WTC) from the Irish border near Aughnacloy to Londonderry, via Omagh and Strabane, will be the single largest road scheme ever undertaken in the Province.

In one single project the entire 88km length of the A5 will be upgraded to a high-quality dual-carriageway. From an all-Ireland perspective, the A5 connects to the Irish N2 road and forms part of the Western Transport Corridor which ultimately aims to improve transport links between Dublin, Londonderry and Donegal both in terms of journey times and road safety.

The survey will be executed in four phases. The preliminary phases will entail a fixed-wing LiDAR survey along the entire length and will cover a 2.5km wide corridor. This will encompass all four route options within the Preferred Corridor, as identified by the appointed consultants, Mouchel. The resultant 3D Digital Terrain Model will provide a highly accurate topographic dataset and facilitate the decision making process with regards to final route selection which is expected this summer.

The final phase of the project will involve a high precision survey of the preferred route using the FLI-MAP helicopter-based LiDAR system. The FLI-MAP survey will cover a 150m corridor and provide the Client with detailed large scale topographic mapping essential for final carriageway design.

Alan Campbell, Production Director adds,

“This is an extremely exciting project for Fugro-BKS. We are delighted to be part of this scheme and look forward to working with Mouchel to provide the geospatial data for their design team and decision makers to ensure total project completion on time.”
